How I spent Nadia and Kev's Christmas present

Nadia and Kev got me book tokens for Christmas. I spent most of them on educational household material (some of you may be able to guess what kind of material, and others will just have to guess—stop chortling at the back, Miller). That left me with about eight quid to spend on a work of fiction for my own personal pleasure.

I went straight to S and picked up a Will Self collection of short stories. As I began reading it one lunch break, I had the feeling that it was very familiar, but put this down to the way Mr Self uses the same characters and settings in most of his works. About halfway through the second lunch break, I finally agreed with the nagging voice in my head that, yes, the reason it was so familiar was because I had read it before. Damn. 'Why does this keep happening to me?!', I wailed (internally).

Fortunately I was able to dig the receipt out of a bin and I persuaded the delectable L to take it into town and swap it for a Magnus Mills story, Explorers of the New Century. Turned out I hadn't read it before, and found it most enjoyable.
